Biography

Dr Yusof Mutahar is an Australian medical doctor, published author, and Islamic theologian with a multidisciplinary career spanning healthcare, education, and classical Islamic scholarship.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Western Australia in 2013 and completed his specialist training in 2017 at the age of 27. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Yusof Mutahar has played an active role in medical education, mentoring students and junior doctors, and publishing several medical texts to support early-career clinicians.

Dr Yusof Mutahar has served in advisory capacities for international health policy and reform initiatives and has been a strong advocate for improving healthcare access and outcomes for disadvantaged communities worldwide.

Alongside his work in medicine, Dr Yusof Mutahar has pursued advanced studies in the Islamic sciences. His areas of focus include Qur’anic memorisation, Exegesis (Tafsīr), Islamic Jurisprudence (Ḥanafī Fiqh), Theology (Māturīdī creed), Islamic history, classical Arabic poetry, and spirituality (Taṣawwuf). His primary expertise lies in Qur’anic exegesis.

He has authored numerous works in Islamic literature. His most significant scholarly contribution is the English translation and summarisation of Tafsīr al-Māturīdī (Ta’wīlāt Ahl al-Sunnah), a foundational 30-volume Qur’anic commentary by the prominent 10th-century theologian Imām Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī. This project represents one of the first comprehensive efforts to make this classical work accessible to English-speaking readers.

Dr Yusof Mutahar is a direct descendant of the first Caliph of Islam, Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu), a heritage that informs both his academic and spiritual outlook.

Outside his professional and scholarly work, Dr Yusof Mutahar is also a dedicated martial artist, holding a black belt in judo and having competed at both national and international levels.
